Design for manufacturability (DFM)

Post by Arvind »

What is DFM (Design for manufacturability)? Why it is so important at lower technology nodes?

Integrated circuit design is limited by manufacturability. As devices scale down, sensitivity to process variation increased dramatically. If we just ignore the process variations then our layout design will be transferred to wafer something like this:

Design for Manufacturability (DFM) is the process by which every aspect of the product and process design is formally evaluated to insure the lowest possible product cost, the fastest possible process cycle time, and the highest possible yield. The importance of designing for manufacturing is underlined by the fact that about 70% of manufacturing costs of a product (cost of materials, processing, and assembly) are determined by the design decisions.

DFM consist a set of different methodologies trying to enforce some soft (recommended/Mandatory) design rules regarding the shapes and polygons of the physical layout which improve the yield.
